Weekend Friendly with C.C.C. at San Sia High School

April 20,2003 F.C.C. vs C.C.C. SanSia High School

Sunday was the first official match for the F.C.C. Playing against the Sri Lankan (C.C.C) at their home ground in San Sia.

After winning the toss we went in to bat with our openers making 45 runs from the first two overs. Darren Burns' 17 was a mixture of classy shot making and good running. Vinay, after a slow start provided a backbone during the middle overs before getting out for a gritty 19. The skipper (Dwight) retired for 51, hitting a 6 to bring up the half ton (Not long after splitting his chin from a top edge). After a great start from our first 3 batsmen our middle order slumped with the following 6 batsmen contributing 6 runs between them (not including the sundries). Our tail fired with Christian making a quick fire 15 n.o. off 2 overs to leave us with a respectable 9-150 from 16 overs.

Christian and Cilliers opened with the new ball to intimidate and decimate the C.C.C.s top order. Cilliers took the first wicket for the club and continued to team with Andrews superb glove work to rip through the Sri Lankans. (Andrew finished with 5 great catches). Sunil and Kerry provided excellent 2nd string bowling to continue the pressure. With Vinay, Ettienne and Darren chipping in with a few overs at the end we had the C.C.C. 9-118 after the allotted 16 overs giving the F.C.C. its first official win by 32 runs. All round good performance by the entire team considering it was the first match in a long time for some players.

After sampling the culinary triumphs from San Sia's local lunch box restaraunters the boys were less than fired up for the second match. Lack of match fitness and a boiling sun taking its toll on the side as C.C.C won the toss and sent us in to field. The openers struggled with the heat, line and length seeing the new ball knocked back over Cilliers head, out of the park. Flatness was our enemy and it won, taking almost 9 overs to get our first wicket. After trying to mix up the bowling and fielding. Some difficult chances were grassed and some not so difficult. Darren Burns came to the rescue bowling some offies (with the occasional cannon fodder) and buying 5 wickets for 26 runs, slowing the run rate and allowing us some hope of reaching the target of 153 runs.

The batting order was mixed up and Jimmy and Vinay started off showing promise however both failed to make double figures. Darren was struck on the thumb and as his claret flowed our wickets tumbled. We were all out for 74 with Ettienne top scoring with 15.

All in all a very positive start for the club. Everybody gave their all and showed (at times) both individual brilliance and a cohesive team spirit. Very impressive as some of us met for the first time that morning.

Some notables:

  • Cilliers' and Christian's first game opening bowling.
  • N0.10 Batsmen Christian with the 2nd highest batting average in the club! (17)
  • Kerry's tidy bowling and timely wickets in both games.
  • Darren's 5 for 26 in game 2.
  • Andrew's brilliant glove work and in the field and his pair with the bat.
  • Ettienne's dig in game 2.
